GATE Testing

GATE Testing Information

The district provides a special program for students who are intellectually gifted. Children in grades 1 – 7 who perform extremely well on the district-administered OtisLennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) and other standardized measurements may qualify for identification as Gifted and Talented (GATE). Students are tested during January and February for placement in the program the following school year.

If you think your child might qualify for identification and you would like to have him or her assessed, a GATE Assessment Consent form may be submitted on the Huntington Beach City School District website at: from November 1 – December 14, 2016, by clicking Parents, Educational Programs, GATE, scroll down, click Parent: GATE Assessment Consent Form, or by contacting Debbie Bartlett in the GATE office at (714) 964-8888 ext. 2036 during these dates.

The last day to submit Consent forms is Wednesday, December 14, 2016. Please note that district policy limits the number of times a student may be assessed to a maximum of two times between first and seventh grade. Due to the limited opportunities to test for the GATE program, you may wish to discuss with your child's teacher at your parent conference in October if this would be an appropriate time to have your child assessed. Testing will take place from January 10 through February 7, 2017. Children who qualify for placement in the program will be placed in the fall of the 2017-18 school year.
