John R. Peterson Elementary School

READ for Success

Peterson won one of the coveted Governor’s Reading Awards each of the three years of its existence (cancelled in 2002-2003 due to budget deficit). Peterson students read over 2 million pages each year and ranked in the top 800 schools in the State for number of pages read per student ratio. This is an important statistic as ongoing practice reading is a significant factor in developing successful readers. Though the program has been canceled at a state level, our school has set its own goal to continue to read over 2 million pages each year and we have been successful in meeting this goal each and every year. We refer to this program as “Read for Success” because we know how important reading is for success in school. We also give out “Super Dolphin Reader” awards at our monthly SPIRIT Assembly to acknowledge a student’s extra effort in the area of reading.
